You have heard it said before but like the sun coming up tomorrow morning at some time your computer will fail.

It might be something non destructive like the power supply but then again it might be the mother board or it might be the hard drive. In any case the risk that you will lose data is real and it is likely that at any time that your computer fails.

In business we stand to lose vital customer information, customer information or our project files.

At home we sometimes lose a whole lot more. Specifically, what would you do if you were to lose some or all of your digital pictures? We can also lose tax data, documents, music (all those iTunes files that you paid for) and more but to me the most devastating of all would be the pictures.

I have talked with more than one person who had their hard drive crash and they lost in one case nearly 5 years of digital pictures. Those pictures COULD NOT BE RECOVERED.

Here are some statistics to consider (I cannot vouch for the accuracy of these !)

  • 31% of all PC users have lost some or all of their files
  • every week 140,000 hard drives crash in the US
  • 20% of all PCs suffer a hardware failure within the first year
  • The average cost to attempt to recover a failed hard drive is $1500. The average success rate is about 30%.

What are your pictures (and other data) worth to you?

  • a monthly subscription to Netflix = $ 7.95
  • a bottle of wine = $ 15.00
  • an average monthly cell phone plan = $ 40.00
  • dinner for two = $ 100.00
  • your photos, video’s and memories = PRICELESS
